Peter K. Dorhout, Ph.D


Education

Dorhout received his B. S. in chemistry in 1985 from the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign, during which time he also worked as a coop student at the DuPont Experimental Station.  His Ph. D. in chemistry was awarded by the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1989.  Part of his dissertation work was performed with colleagues at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he has had an 18-year collaborative relationship in nuclear materials. Also, he spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University before joining the faculty at Colorado State. 

Expertise

A member of the CSU faculty since 1991, Dorhout is a recognized expert in solid state and materials chemistry and environmental chemistry. He has active programs in solid state f-element chemistry and nanomaterials science, and his current research interests include heavy metal detection and remediation in aqueous environments, ferroelectric nanomaterials, actinide and rare-earth metal solid state chemistry, and nuclear non-proliferation.

Affiliations

He on the Board of Directors of the Colorado NanoTechnology Association. He is also an active member in the American Chemical Society, being an elected representative from Colorado to the National Council and elected to serve on the national Committee on Committees as well as the Presidential Leadership Task Force of the ACS. He currently serves on the National Graduate Curriculum Committee for the Homeland Security/Defense Education Consortium.
