Scialog: Solar Energy Conversion

Sponsored by Research Corporation for Science Advancement (RCSA)
and NSF CHE-DMR-DMS Solar Energy Initiative (SOLAR)

Tuesday Evening through Friday, October 9-12, 2012 at Biosphere 2, Tucson, Arizona USA

There are no onsite expenses or registration fee for RCSA Scialog Fellows or NSF SOLAR awardees.

RCSA coined the word Scialog because we want to generate the kind of science dialog that catalyzes ideas for research that lead to transformational outcomes. This Conference is the third in a multi-year Scialog on solar energy conversion, after which we hope to see breakthroughs in science or new pathways toward breakthroughs that would have been highly unlikely without the dialog.

Objectives of the Conference

Scialog aims to create the special stew of people, place, perspectives, knowledge, process, and interactions that generates creative energy—that stew that unleashes the human imagination—and accelerates breakthroughs for solving complex, interdisciplinary problems.

  • Identify and analyze bottlenecks in solar energy conversion and approaches for breakthroughs
  • Build a creative cross-disciplinary community that is more likely to produce breakthroughs
  • Form teams to write proposals based on ideas that emerge at the conference
  • Engage in authentic dialog to accelerate cross-disciplinary, high-risk/high-reward research

2012 Keynote Speakers

  • Neal Armstrong University of Arizona, Director, Center for Interface Science: Solar Electric Materials
  • Larry “Kaz” Kazmerski Director, National Center for Photovoltaics at NREL
  • Ramamoorthy Ramesh UC, Berkeley, Director, DOE SunShot Initiative & Solar Energy Technologies Program
  • Michael Woodhouse Solar PV Technologies and Economics Analyst at NREL
  • Peidong Yang UC, Berkeley, Department Head at the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis

Conference activities will include presentations by keynote speakers, poster sessions, facilitated and undirected dialog, and proposal writing for additional funding between collaborative teams formed at the conference based on ideas that emerge during dialog.
