Swarthmore Scientist wins APS Prize

Michael R. Brown, physics professor at Swarthmore College has won a prestigious, Research Corporation-sponsored prize from the American Physical Society.

Brown receives a $5,000 stipend and a separate $5,000 unrestricted grant to his institution in recognition of his research work at an undergraduate institution.

The prize recognizes Brown's "outstanding contributions to plasma physics made possible by his development of a world-class spheromak laboratory at Swarthmore, and for his energetic mentoring of undergraduate students."

According to the APS, Brown has established the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX) with the assistance of 16 senior honors students and more than $2.5 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Science Foundation. His former students include an APS Apker winner and two finalists.

Brown is a past member of the executive committee of the APS Division of Plasma Physics and a winner of the DOE Junior Investigator Award. He received his undergraduate Degree in physics from Pomona College in 1981 and his Ph.D. in physics from Dartmouth in 1987. He was a senior research fellow at Caltech before joining the Swarthmore faculty in 1994

The prize was established by a 1984 grant from Research Corporation, America's first foundation dedicated wholly to science, established in 1912.
